Vista Tweaks

April 16, 2008

TweakVista Tweakvista.com is a great online site which contains News, Articles and Tips on how you can optimize Windows Vista. From Security, Software and Performance to Customizing your Interface it has it all. IT also has a free trial(30 days) of its TweakVista™ Utility [4.4Mb] (download here) which makes getting the best performance out of your Windows Vista box a breeze. The full version obviously has more features and costs US $19.95.

Things not available in the trial version include:

  • Auto system startup, shutdown and sleep/resume.
  • Ability to view system resources in use.
  • Ability to view locked files.
  • Simple and advanced modification of running services.
  • Advanced modification of security.
  • Configuration of display.
  • Advanced power controls.
  • Advanced internet settings.
  • Advanced SMART guard control.
  • And Misc Tweaks.

BUT the stuff on that is included on the trial is great some of the features that I loved included:

  • Very nice User Interface. Click here to see it.
  • Choice of start up programs.
  • Ability to see what each process is using (eg. Firefox was using 150mb of RAM).
  • Overviews of most things are included such as Display but the tweaking part isn’t included in trial.
  • My personal favorite the cost & carbon footprint analysis section. Click here for mine.
  • And the assessment tool. Works in the same way the default tool does but this displays its findings rather than giving you a rating.

All in all the site its a great tool for both the novice and tech savy user explaining how to tweak ones computer in easy to follow step by step instructions. And the TweakVista Utility is also a must if you can afford to get the retail version I highly suggest you purchase it to see a great improvement in the overall performance and feel of your computer.

Google Earth

April 16, 2008

Google EarthGoogle Earth™ displays satellite images of most inhabited regions of Earth, allowing users to visually see things like houses and cars from a bird’s eye view. The degree of resolution available is based somewhat on the points of interest, but most land (except for some islands) is covered in at least 15 meters of resolution. Its a great fun tool to have when your bored you can try find your house, take a sight seeing trip around the globe or use the hidden flight simulator
(Press Ctrl+Alt+A) for a quick fly around, it only includes two planes the F-16 Falcon and the Cirrus SR-22 not a very good simulator but as you can imagine the scenery is great.

Also included is Google Sky™. This is a fun tool for looking out into the stars with major constellations and other points of interest shown in very high detail and after clicking you are provided with some information about the object.

A recommended download for anyone with some spare time. Download from here.

For some reason mine crashed after I started spinning the globe around really fast and letting it go. Maybe it exceeded 1670km/h (the rotation speed of earth at the equator) and the people on it started getting nauseas. :)
